LCCU Celebrates 10 Years!

On May 23, 2010, the Latino Community Credit Union (LCCU) celebrated its 10 year anniversary in an event open to our members*.
Our member owners can feel very proud of LCCU’s growth during its first decade. In these 10 years LCCU has opened 10 branches, reached almost $100 million in assets and 54,000 members, being the fastest growing community credit union in the country during several years. The 10 branches are located across the state in Durham, Carrboro (opened in April 2010), Raleigh, Garner, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Charlotte (East and South), Fayetteville, and Monroe (opened in June 2010). Also, the majority of the 54,000 members are low-income and previously unbanked.
Over the past ten years, LCCU has provided over $130 Million in loans helping over 10,000 families. The Credit Union has received numerous local, state and national awards in recognition of its model for providing financial services and education to the underserved. Some of these awards include the Herb Wegner Award from the National Credit Union Foundation, the Wachovia Wells Fargo Next Awards for Opportunity Finance, and Southern Growth Innovator Award from the Southern Growth Policies Board.
Latino Credit Union offers competitive interest rates for deposit accounts, low-cost transaction accounts and money transfer services, affordable personal and car loans, credit cards, mortgage and micro-business loans and services, free tax preparation services, as well as a comprehensive financial education program. LCCU’s goal is to integrate unbanked and other underserved populations into the mainstream U.S. financial system and help them build wealth for themselves, their families and their communities.
* The event was hosted in the Durham Armory and will have as main speakers Ms. Gabriela Zabala, Director of the Office of Hispanic/Latino Affairs for the NC governor’s office, and Mr. Carlos Flores Vizcarra, Consul General of Mexico in Raleigh.
