Misael Martinez Memorial Scholarship
The Misael Martinez Memorial Scholarship was an education fund created jointly in December of 2006 by the Latino Community Development Center (LCDC) and Latino Credit Union (LCCU) to support high achieving Hispanic students who want to attend college. The scholarship honored Army Staff Sergeant Misael Martinez, the first Hispanic soldier from Orange County (North Carolina) to die serving his country.

About Misael Martinez
As many other young American men who cannot afford college tuition, Misael Martinez of Chapel Hill, N.C, joined the US military to earn education benefits. He was on his third tour of duty in Iraq when he was killed by a roadside bomb in Ramadi during combat operations on November 11, 2006, which coincided with Veteran’s Day.
Martinez was 24. He was assigned to the 16th Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division in Giessen, Germany. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for meritorious service.
