In only nine years, LCCU has financed over 15,700 loans for a total of $173 million, primarily for consumer purposes. Since it first began offering mortgages in mid-2004, LCCU has made 373 mortgages for $37 million. Over 10,000 participants have attended LCCU’s in-branch financial education workshops since 2000.
“Latino Credit Union has accomplished so much in only 9 years since it opened in 2000, I am excited to see what Latino Credit Union will be doing ten years from now,” says Senator Josh Stein.
Latino Community Credit Union is a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), community based and member-owned non-profit financial institution offering bilingual financial services, better credit options, and financial education to the North Carolina Latino community and other unbanked people. Founded in 2000 as a grassroots response to a wave of robberies and muggings of Latino immigrants in Durham, North Carolina, LCCU has become a national model for credit unions and other financial institutions seeking to serve unbanked, immigrant communities.
