In a ceremony held on Monday, June 9th at the North Carolina Credit Union League’s 73rd Annual Meeting in Pinehurst, North Carolina, Latino Credit Union Chairman John Herrera was given the Ronald J. Hutchins Credit Union Persons of the Year Award for his volunteer work in the credit union field.
The Ronald J. Hutchins Award is given annually to the persons (Career and Volunteer) who “demonstrate exceptional qualities of leadership in his/her own credit union and who display outstanding dedication to the credit union movement.”
John Herrera is a visionary leader of the North Carolina credit union movement. Mr. Herrera’s commitment to serving members, especially low income families, is undeniable. Herrera is one of the original founders of the Latino Community Credit Union. “Through determination and education John has "made it in America" and, now he gives back through his compassion and commitment to his country, his community and his credit union,” said Jim Blaine, President, State Employees' Credit Union. “Read his story, John is truly one of my favorite (new) American heroes!!"
Turning Herrera’s vision into reality, LCCU created the credit union to provide low-cost, quality products and services, without discriminating in pricing. Mr. Herrera is frequently contacted by numerous organizations seeking advice and support to develop financial institutions serving the unbanked and immigrant communities, including the Nobel Prize winning Grameen Bank that plans to expand its model to the United States.
John Herrera’s daytime job is Vice President of Latino/Hispanic Affairs for the Center for Community Self-Help . Mr. Herrera is also a board member of the North Carolina Minority Support Center, a statewide Community Development financial Institution (CDFI) intermediary, which provides support to community development credit unions that provide services to minorities, primarily African Americans and Latinos.
John Herrera is an Alderman in Carrboro, N.C. In November 2001 Herrera was elected to the Board of Aldermen in Carrboro, and reelected in 2005, becoming the first Hispanic immigrant ever elected to municipal office in North Carolina.
